DSY Medical Education Sdn Bhd

We’re SCOTMED

The School of Complementary & Traditional Medicine (SCOTMED) offers professional upgrade programmes in collaboration with recognised professional associations within the emerging complementary and traditional medicine professions and industry.

All professional qualifications are validated and awarded by UCYP University, which has incorporated SCOTMED as part of its Centre for Continuing Education, as well as Institute of Complementary and Traditional Medicine (ICTM).

Currently, SCOTMED is the only centre offering professional membership upgrade programmes for the Association of Nutritional & Functional Medicine Practitioners (ANFMP) Malaysia (www.anfmp.org.my), a founding member of the Federation of Complementary & Natural Medical Associations Malaysia (www.fcnmam.org/index.html). This Federation is gazetted under the Traditional & Complementary Medicine Act 2016.

Development of membership upgrade programmes is underway through collaborations with several other professional associations/societies.

A highly dedicated management team administers SCOTMED to meet the aspirations of UCYP University and ICTM, the various professional associations, and candidates enrolled in the programmes.

In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic; recorded/online teaching, online face-to-face interactions, group discussions, and provision of updated teaching materials and research articles, are offered to every candidate in the programmes. Mentoring is also encouraged. Learning progress is closely monitored by the management team to ensure the learning process is both enjoyable and effective. These features help SCOTMED deliver its programmes with a highly competitive cost advantage.

SCOTMED is located in a newly-constructed, 3-storey modern office block, fully-renovated for its dedicated use in the provision of complementary and traditional medical courses.

DELIVERING THE SCOTMED DIFFERENCE

  • Entry to each of our professional programmes, meets the requirements imposed by the respective Association/Society;
  • SCOTMED appoints only senior practitioners to tutor every module in its professional certificates or diploma, while the profession’s top leaders are responsible for developing the curricula in collaboration with the respective professional association/society;
  • Professional qualifying programmes are being developed in consultation with the leading professional medical societies/associations, to ensure technical content for each qualification meets the academic requirements for their clinical practice;
  • Teaching and learning of academic content are facilitated by use of online teaching material, web seminars, mentoring, personal supervision, face-to-face interactions (live or online), completion of assessments and examinations; and
  • The Academic Board of SCOTMED requires every module that teaches complementary medical therapy to be evidence-based.
  • Currently, candidates on its programmes come from countries around ASEAN, China, and Australia.

What will Nutritional and Functional Medicine students be trained in?

The programme is very similar to graduate programmes offered internationally. In Malaysia, SCOTMED has teamed up with UCYP University and Institute of Complementary and Traditional Medicine (ICTM) to train practitioners who can serve patients suffering from chronic disorders.

Message from the Head

Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Science, Engineering & Agrotechnology, University College of Yayasan Pahang.

Malaysia is probably the only country in Asia with parliamentary laws to regulate the practice of complementary and traditional local medicine (also known overseas as CAM) as well as protecting the interest of the public seeking the services of qualified practitioners.

Based on research studies, more than 70% of Malaysians seek assistance from complementary medical practitioners in managing their chronic health disorders.

The major objectives of this School include:

  1. To meet the country’s aspirations in upgrading healthcare professionals, particularly those in complementary medicine so as to empower them to function effectively in the current and post-COVID era;
  2. To promote life-long learning and to spearhead the professional development for other healthcare practitioners wishing to practise complementary medicine;
  3. To meet the needs of senior practitioners wishing to tutor and supervise qualifying professional programmes promoted by the various member societies/associations within the complementary medical professions;
  4. To promote Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) that is led by leading healthcare professionals; and
  5. To help position Malaysia as a regional Centre of Excellence in evidence-based CAM training.

The School offers cutting-edge evidence-based knowledge on adjunct treatment of major chronic health disorders linked to dietary/lifestyle habits and genetic dispositions.

This knowhow has been used under clinical context, nationally and internationally, in managing or even reversing these disorders for the past 2 decades. In addition, the bulk of the national health budget in most developing countries, is spent on treating these chronic diseases.

Besides nutritional/functional medicine, training programmes for other treatment modalities within both complementary and traditional medicine, are being developed in collaboration with relevant professional bodies for delivery in the coming years.

The School looks forward to a mutually-rewarding journey of learning with you in the years ahead.
